Spencer Hot Springs is the Highway-50 'Loneliest Road in America' iconic free soak in Lander County, Nevada — about 6 miles east of Austin via a graded dirt road into the Big Smoky Valley. Multiple cowboy-tub configurations sit on a low rise overlooking the valley, fed by a 130°F vent piped through a swiveling overhead pipe so soakers can dial in temperature by directing the flow into or away from the tub. Sunset over the Toiyabe Range, frequent wild-burro sightings, and dispersed BLM camping make it a legendary Great Basin overnight stop. Free, no facilities, year-round.

What to expect

Drive 6 miles east of Austin on US-50, then south on a graded dirt spur (passable to most vehicles when dry; do not attempt after rain). Multiple tubs at the site — the famous 'cowboy tub' is the most photographed. Adjust temperature by swinging the overhead source pipe. Clothing-optional in practice. Dispersed camping permitted on adjacent BLM land — many overnight visitors set up at sunset, soak, sleep, soak again at sunrise. Cell signal is zero from Austin south.
