Travertine Hot Springs is the iconic free wild soak just outside Bridgeport, California — a series of travertine-deposited terrace pools on a high desert hillside above the Bridgeport Valley, with sweeping views of the Sawtooth Ridge and the eastern Sierra Nevada. Five-six pools at varying temperatures, sculpted by mineral deposition and informally maintained by visitors. Free, BLM-managed, accessed via a short rough dirt road off Highway 395 — the road becomes impassable mud after rain. Summer-and-shoulder-season operation; winter access is intermittent.

What to expect

Drive south of Bridgeport on Highway 395 for ~3 miles, turn east onto Jack Sawyer Road and the spur dirt road that climbs to the springs (a quarter-mile, rough but usually passable to standard cars when dry). Park at the open lot. Walk a short path to the pool terraces. Multiple pools at temperatures from 95°F at the source vent to 90°F at the lower terraces. Clothing-optional in practice. Pack out everything; soap is prohibited to protect the travertine deposits.
