Breitenbush is a worker-owned cooperative wellness retreat in the Oregon Cascades, deep in the Willamette National Forest about two hours east of Portland. Its mineral pools, wood-fired steam sauna, and silence-policy meadow soak draw a particular kind of visitor — repeat retreat-goers, yoga teachers, and Northwest regulars who book 6-12 months out. The cooperative also runs the rebuild after the 2020 Lionshead Fire, which destroyed most of the lodging; reconstruction is partial and ongoing.

What to expect

Day-use is by reservation only and capped to protect the retreat character. The four hot pools cluster on a forested deck above the Breitenbush River; the silence-policy meadow tubs require speaking only in whispers. Vegetarian buffet meals included with overnight stays. Cell phones are explicitly discouraged everywhere outside cabins.
