Umpqua Hot Springs - Day-use fee or pay-per-soak in Idleyld Park, OR (2026)
Tufa pools cling to a cliff above the North Umpqua River, shaded by Douglas firs and reachable via a quick but steep trail. A small cedar shelter covers the hottest pool.

Umpqua Hot Springs is one of Oregon's most photogenic primitive soaks — a series of small travertine pools cantilevered on a cliff edge above the North Umpqua River, with one pool covered by a small cedar shelter built decades ago. The Forest Service manages the site with a $5 vehicle pass requirement and no overnight camping. The trail in is a steep 0.3-mile uphill scramble from the parking area; trail icy in winter. The site's combination of cliff-edge views, the cedar shelter, and the Cascade old-growth setting make it consistently one of the top-photographed soaks in the Pacific Northwest.
What to expect
Drive Highway 138 east of Roseburg (about 60 miles). The Umpqua Hot Springs parking area is signed off Toketee Lake Road. Display a Northwest Forest Pass or pay $5/vehicle. Hike the 0.3-mile uphill trail to the pools — steep enough that you'll feel it, short enough that anyone can do it. Multiple pools cascade down the cliff edge; the cedar-shelter pool is the iconic one. Clothing-optional in practice. No camping. Pack out everything.
